Caprese Michelangelo

The first testimonies of the presence of the castle of caprese can be traced back to 1082 when it belonged to the lords of galbino, although the Caprese name is already present in a document of 1011. Tradition goes back to the period of the struggles between Lombards and Byzantines. In 1104 the castle was ceded to the camaldolesi along with all its district. In this small town on March 6, 1475 the famous artist Michelangelo Buonarroti was born. The following centuries are characterized by the decay of the castle, which in various testimonies is described as ruined and uninhabited. The state of abandonment ended in the second half of the 19th century with the discovery of the birth certificate of Michelangelo Buonarroti, which was followed by numerous restoration works and the creation of the first “museum Michelangelo Michelangelo”now called Museo Casa Natale by Michelangelo Buonarroti.
