Castel San Niccolò Castle

The town of Castel Niccolò known as Castello rises on a rocky spur located on a hill formerly called Ghianzuolo, and is constituted by the Castle that gives name to the town and by an agglomeration of houses built outside the castle walls. The castle, formerly called Corte in Vado during the Middle Ages, divided the Republics of Arezzo and Florence and in 1253 passed from Count Guido novello to Count Guido novello di modigliana, always a member of the family of the Guidi Counts. The fortress remained in the possession of the Guidi Counts until 1440, when it underwent some modifications becoming the residence of the Florentine Podestà until the first years of the XVIII-th century. When the mayor moved to Poppi, the ancient castle became a colonial house. Renovated in 1970, it became accessible to visitors again.
