Chitignano

The territory of the municipality of Chitignano, the least extensive, with its 15kmq. Among all those of Casentino, it reproduces in its borders the district of one of the few rural Tuscan lordships preserved from the Middle Ages until the end of the eighteenth century. The imperial county of Chitignano was enfeoffed in the tenth century to the Ubertini of Arezzo and was never formally annexed to the Florentine Republic, with which in 1384 entered into an agreement of accomandigia (military and political protection) as a tax-exempt fief and dependent on the feudal vicar who administered on behalf of his counts.
