S.Maria in Altaserra Parish Church

The locality of Altaserra is known to archaeologists for the Roman sarcophagus in travertine
found on the forecourt of the ancient Church of Santa Maria, sitauted exactly in Altaserra, but
now preserved in the cloister of the paleontological museum of Montevarchi.
The locality is also well known to archeologists thanks to the abundance of old materials dating back to the Etruscan period, found in the surrounding soil; also near the cemetery have been found etruscan tombs.
The parish church is clearly of ancient origins, it may be that its  Foundation dates back to the 8th century, in the early Christian period, and probably it had been built on a previous Roman building.
